Iron Age in India had started about 3000 years before the industry started in European countries. The Iron Age is generally thought to have occurred in different parts of India towards the end of the Late Harappan or Chalcolithic phases, which are represented by copper bronze finds. In fact, India was considered to be the centre of origin of iron and steel industry in the world. The Indian subcontinent provides a booming ethnographic record of blacksmithing practices and surviving data of iron smelting activities;
The present volume aims to give a broad view of the Iron Age in different periods and different parts of India in detail along with experimental data. Ample amount of archaeological evidences have been provided and a detailed study has been made regarding such evidences which would convince the reader that India was a pioneer in the existent technology of iron metallurgy.
